The story follows Opal, a sharp and determined young woman who’s trying to make sense of her complicated life. She ends up at the mysterious Starling House, a sprawling mansion with its own dark secrets. And, honestly, the house itself might be one of the best characters in the book—it’s as much a character as anyone else, full of life and mystery that you can't quite shake.
Harrow’s writing is gorgeous. She knows how to create a world that feels both magical and real, which is no easy feat. There’s something incredibly special about how she mixes the fantasy elements with real human emotions. Opal is such a relatable character—strong, but with plenty of vulnerability—and the relationships she builds with the people around her (and with the house!) are so heartfelt.
What really stands out to me is how Harrow crafts the female characters. They’re messy, complex, and beautifully imperfect, making them feel so real.
