Book Review: Starling House by Alix E. Harrow

If you’re a fan of atmospheric fantasy, Starling House by Alix E. Harrow is a book you absolutely need to pick up.

Starling House by Alix E. Harrow is one of those books that pulls you in right from the start and doesn’t let go. If you're a fan of atmospheric fantasy, this one’s for you—think magic, mystery, and a whole lot of heart.

The story follows Opal, a sharp and determined young woman who’s trying to make sense of her complicated life. She ends up at the mysterious Starling House, a sprawling mansion with its own dark secrets. And, honestly, the house itself might be one of the best characters in the book—it’s as much a character as anyone else, full of life and mystery that you can't quite shake.

Harrow’s writing is gorgeous. She knows how to create a world that feels both magical and real, which is no easy feat. There’s something incredibly special about how she mixes the fantasy elements with real human emotions. Opal is such a relatable character—strong, but with plenty of vulnerability—and the relationships she builds with the people around her (and with the house!) are so heartfelt.

What really stands out to me is how Harrow crafts the female characters. They’re messy, complex, and beautifully imperfect, making them feel so real. It’s a story about sisterhood, self-discovery, and facing the things we fear, and I think a lot of readers will find themselves connecting with the emotional depth of it all.

The fantasy part? It’s there in spades. The magic isn’t just something cool that happens—it feels alive, like it’s part of the world itself. And the mystery surrounding the house will keep you hooked, always wondering what’s next.

If you love books with a bit of darkness, a lot of magic, and a cast of characters you won’t forget, Starling House should definitely be on your radar. It’s perfect for anyone who loves their fantasy with a side of mystery and a dash of the gothic. Harrow has once again knocked it out of the park, and this one will stick with you long after you finish it.

Pure magic! From the moment we arrived at the most breathtaking villa nestled in the rolling Tuscan hills, Meagan made sure every detail felt like it had been curated straight out of an Italian dream.

I attended the February Caribbean reading retreat and wish I could rate it higher than 5 stars! This was the best vacation I could have imagined. Not only was the resort amazing, the conversation and the ladies could not have been better.

I had such a lovely time on my retreat to Sicily. Megan is an amazing host who really looked after all of the group and made the trip feel like a fab holiday with friends. I went alone and everyone was lovely - I will happily book again next year. Book! You won't regret it.
