15 Dark Romances That Made Me Question My Morals (and Still 5-Starred Anyway)

Power, pain, pleasure, danger. These dark romances broke our brains and stole our hearts.

If loving them is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Dark romance isn’t just about spice—it’s about surrender. Power games, pain and pleasure, danger you shouldn't crave... but absolutely do. These are the books that made us gasp, blush, question everything—and then immediately add the sequel to our cart.

1. Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton

Stalker. Hacker. Killer. Lover. Zade Meadows is every red flag—and the entire damn circus. But once he gets his hands on you? Game over.

2. There Are No Saints by Sophie Lark (Book 1 of the Sinner's Duet)

Cole Blackwell is an artist with a... murder hobby. This series is brutal, brilliant, and sexually unhinged. You will root for the serial killer. No notes.

3. Ruthless Creatures by J.T. Geissinger

A mafia enforcer with a gravel voice and zero patience for slow burn. He kidnaps her, threatens her, and still gets on one knee. Iconic.

4. Dark Notes by Pam Godwin

Student/teacher? Yes. Age gap? Yes. Dub-con in a piano practice room? Absolutely. This book is a problem—and a 5-star one at that.

5. The Sweetest Oblivion by Danielle Lori

This entire series is mafia filth, but Nico’s brand of control and possessiveness? Delicious. It's morally murky and deeply addictive.

6. Twisted Loyalties by Cora Reilly

A cage fighter in the mafia world with serious emotional repression issues. Painful, primal, and feral in the best way.

7. Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters

Kidnapped, broken, remade. A total mindf*ck with serious dub-con themes. Read the warnings—then proceed at your own risk (and pleasure).

8. Sicko by Amo Jones

Stepbrother. Assassin. Motorcycle club royalty. He leaves her and comes back darker. It's messy, toxic, and somehow romantic?? Help.

9. The Ritual by Shantel Tessier

A secret society, public rituals, and scenes that live rent-free in your head. It's like Eyes Wide Shut for the Kindle Unlimited generation.

10. Praise by Sara Cate

The whole Salacious Players Club series toes the line, but Praise gives you a Daddy Dom who will ruin you—in and out of the bedroom.

11. The Maddest Obsession by Danielle Lori

A Russian mobster with PTSD and a trigger finger. Christian Allister is obsessive, aggressive, and dangerously good in bed.

12. Does It Hurt? by H.D. Carlton

A dark, shipwrecked survival romance with lies, betrayal, and shark-infested sex. Yes, really.

13. Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann

This is less about dark romance and more about trauma-bonded love. But if you like emotionally devastating spice, it belongs here.

14. Pen Pal by J.T. Geissinger

A widow starts receiving letters from a mysterious man… who may not be what he seems. Supernatural twist meets obsessive romance. Unputdownable.

15. King of Wrath by Ana Huang

He’s emotionally unavailable, morally questionable, and sex-on-legs. Not as pitch-black as others, but still villain-coded enough to qualify.

Final Note:

If you find yourself rooting for the kidnapper, falling for the killer, or melting over a man who says “You’re mine” a little too aggressively? Just know—you’re not alone. You’re just a dark romance reader.

And in this space? That’s our love language.

Pure magic! From the moment we arrived at the most breathtaking villa nestled in the rolling Tuscan hills, Meagan made sure every detail felt like it had been curated straight out of an Italian dream.

I attended the February Caribbean reading retreat and wish I could rate it higher than 5 stars! This was the best vacation I could have imagined. Not only was the resort amazing, the conversation and the ladies could not have been better.

I had such a lovely time on my retreat to Sicily. Megan is an amazing host who really looked after all of the group and made the trip feel like a fab holiday with friends. I went alone and everyone was lovely - I will happily book again next year. Book! You won't regret it.
